Smuggled orangutans arrive in Indonesia's Sumatra island

Description

Eleven Sumatran orangutans are back in Indonesia after the animals -- an endangered species -- were rescued while being smuggled in Malaysia and Thailand. Two of the animals, sent from Thailand, arrived at a sanctuary in Indonesia’s Jambi province Friday where they will undergo quarantine and rehabilitation before they can be released into the wild. Nine others, aged between six and seven years arrived in North Sumatra from Malaysia on Friday, where they will also be taken to a sanctuary. All the animals arrived in Indonesia on Thursday. The World Wildlife Fund estimates there are only about 100,000 orangutans left, less than half of a decade ago. Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered with around 15,000 remaining. ++ TEXT TO FOLLOW ++ N°8XD96KN°8XE2GY
