The Largest Snowfall In Years is Expected To Hit The Northeast Tonight

A powerful winter storm that is currently drenching the Southeast will bring snow to the Mid-Atlantic states. The storm will drop its first snow Wednesday morning from West Virginia to New York. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has projected it could be the city's "biggest storm in several years." The peak of the storm is expected to come later Wednesday and into Thursday morning. Heavy snowfall is projected for areas across the Northeast, CNN meteorologist Pedram Javaheri said. Some areas, including Washington, DC will instead see a wintry mix.

Parts of Japan hit by record snowfall

Japan deployed the military to help residents trapped by record snowfall that has blanketed parts of the country, with 10,000 homes losing power in the north and west. A record 2.17 metres (7.12 feet) of snow fell in Minakami in Gunma prefecture over 72 hours, reports said, while Yuzawa in Niigata prefecture, famous for skiing, got a record 1.8 metres of snow on Thursday morning. Japan's Meteorological Agency said the storm was forecast to weaken temporarily but more snow was expected for the region over the weekend. The cold snap comes as Japan battles a spike in coronavirus cases, even though it has had a relatively small outbreak overall and has avoided imposing strict lockdown measures.

Les éthylotests disponibles dans les commerces qui vendent de l'alcool dès juillet

Jusque-là, seules les discothèques et les épiceries de nuit devaient proposer des éthylotests à leurs clients. Cette obligation va bientôt s'étendre à tous les magasins qui vendent de l'alcool. Mais Julien Chivé, caviste bordelais, n'est pas vraiment convaincu. "Je trouve que ça ne sert pas à grand-chose. Les gens savent bien qu'après deux verres, il faut s'arrêter si on veut reprendre la voiture. Et les clients rencontrés ce jeudi matin ne voient pas non plus l'intérêt d'en acheter. "Ca me semble absurde", lance l'un d'eux. "De toute façon, après deux verres, on sera positif, donc c'est à chacun de se gérer", explique un autre.Dans l'épicerie de Virgine Matheron, à Talence (Gironde), il est difficile de trouver une place pour les éthylotests. La gérante doit enlever des produits et envisage surtout des coûts supplémentaires. En effet, dans le supermarché Carrefour City, qui en commercialise depuis un an, ces produits ne sont pas très populaires. "On en a vendu trois en un an", confie le gérant. Près de 50 000 commerçants devraient proposer des éthylotests à partir du 1er juillet, sous peine d'une amende de 675 euros.
