Coronavirus pandemic: Macron met heads of state, leaders before positive test

French President Emmanuel Macron met numerous heads of state and high-level officials in the 10 days before he tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday, including most European leaders at a summit on Dec 10-11. FRANCE 24's French Politics Editor Marc Perelman tells us more.

    Business Insider reports world-famous Portuguese soccer star and mega-gazillionaire Cristiano Ronaldo has tested positive for the coronavirus. Business Insider reports the Portuguese Football Federation said the 35-year-old is 'doing well, without symptoms, and in isolation.' After Ronaldo, who plays as a forward for Juventus, tested positive, his teammates all took new tests and received negative results. Ronaldo brought in $109 million in 2019. According to Forbes, that makes him the second-highest-paid athlete in the world, behind only Lionel Messi. After nine seasons with Real Madrid, Ronaldo signed a four-year deal in 2018 with Italian powerhouse Juventus. That banks him a sweet $64 million a year.

    In the third such announcement since Friday, Sen. Ron Johnson on Saturday announced that he had tested positive for COVID-19. According to Business Insider, Sen. Johnson is the third Republican senator to announce a positive result for the disease. Johnson's office said the senator returned to Washington, DC, on September 29 and was exposed to COVID-19 'shortly' afterward. Aged 65, the Wisconsin senator is currently symptom-free and is in isolation. He joins two fellow GOP Sens. Mike Lee (R-Ut.) and Thom Tillis (R-NC), who are both members on the Senate Judiciary Committee — and COVID-19 positive.

    The stock market took a dive on Friday on news that US President Donald Trump has tested positive for COVID-19. According to Business Insider, industry experts think the cruise industry could take a hit from the news. Macquarie analyst Paul Golding says an event raising the visibility of the virus could 'potentially alter the timeline for full resumption for the cruise lines.' Golding added that anything that increases the likelihood of a new administration in January could negatively impact cruise supply and demand. He explained that a new administration would likely be less sympathetic toward cruise lines reopening without a vaccine. Furthermore, a Biden administration would likely be 'more keen to follow doctor, scientist, and expert recommendations.'
