Arab Spring 10 years on: Looking at what is left of the Jasmine Revolution

Description

Tunisia on Thursday marked 10 years since a local fruit and vegetable seller set himself ablaze in protest after police took his cart, an act that enraged the country and snowballed into the revolution that toppled the North African nation's autocratic leader months later and triggered the Arab Spring. The economically troubled region of Sidi Bouzid in central Tunisia where the self-immolation took place is still waiting — a decade later — to reap rewards from the uprising. FRANCE 24's International Affairs Philip Turle tells us more.

  • Tunisia, coming closer to dictatorship 10 years after the Arab Spring

Tunis, 13 Jan (EFE), (Camera: Natalia Román Morte).- Diez years after the Tunisian dictator Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia, a democratic transition that never arrives has caused disappointment among many. The Free Destourian Party (PDL), which clearly supports the old regime, leads this disappointment and some surveys show it as the winner in the next country's elections with 37% of the votes.FOOTAGE OF TUNIS. SOUNDBITES OF:-MOHAMED ASSAAD DRIDI, VOTER OF THE FREE DESTOURIAN PARTY (PDL):"It was not a revolution, It was a plan previously orchestrated and, when the events of Kasserine and Sidi Bouzid took place, they activated it. It was a plan orchestrated from the outside. The young people, as always, take to the streets when there is a problem. The politicians were implicated and earned money with it. We saw how Ben Ali was kidnapped he did not flee. " -SELIM KHARRAT, POLITICAL ANALYST:"It is a very complicated and tense socio-economic context, which represents the main danger for the democratic transition. Why? Because it makes that many Tunisians do not believe in the direction we took 10 years ago and who do not see the fruits of this political change."
