Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is handing over the reins of his $1.7 trillion shopping and entertainment empire to Andy Jassy. Bezos will now be devoting more time to space exploration, philanthropy and The Washington Post. In a year of record profits for the on-line retailer, Ava Seave calls it "a really good strategic move by Bezos." With Amazon under such intense scrutiny - facing a restive workforce and calls for tighter regulation, "it makes sense for ‘the richest guy in the world’ to step away from managing the company." Nevertheless, Ms. Seave is quite certain that he will still maintain a certain level of influence and "the company will, in fact, proceed as if Bezos was the head." Ava Seave is Principal and Co-founder of Quantum Media; Ms. Seave is also Adjunct Professor at Columbia Business School and Columbia Journalism School.
Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in his garage almost 30 years ago, and grew it into the world's biggest online retailer. He has announced he will step down as its Chief Executive later this year, although he will remain on as Executive Chairman. Bezos became the world's richest man while running Amazon, and will be replaced by the head of the company's cloud division, Andy Jassy. Also today, despite the gloomy economic picture in France, the country's bakeries are struggling to recruit staff: some 9,000 jobs are on offer.
Earth's wealthiest man Jeff Bezos says he's "going to build a road to space so that our kids and their kids can build the future" as he returns from a space flight with the crew of his firm Blue Origin's first crewed space mission. The crew included 82-year-old barrier-breaking woman aviator Wally Funk and and 18-year-old Dutch teen Oliver Daemen. Funk and Daemen became the oldest and youngest astronauts, respectively.
As he prepares to blast off into a new career stage, Jeff Bezos leaves an enduring legacy after transforming Amazon from a modest online bookseller into one of the world's most powerful corporations. Bezos, 57, was set to hand over the job of Amazon chief executive on Monday to Andy Jassy and turn his attention to his private space exploration firm, philanthropy and other endeavors.
