The United States denounces "loose talk" on nuclear weapons after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would only use an atomic weapon in response to an enemy strike. Declining to respond directly to Putin, State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters, "We think any loose talk of nuclear weapons is absolutely irresponsible." SOUNDBITE

Russia vetoes a nine-month extension of a key Syria aid route at the UN Security Council, a day after the vital mechanism providing life-saving support to millions of people expired. While many council members including the United States and Britain have called for a full year extension, Russia has insisted on just six months and rejected the nine-month compromise proposed by Switzerland and Brazil.
