Twenty years on, Afghans recall destruction of Bamiyan Buddhas

Description

For generations, Ghulam Sakhi and his family -- like many others in the Bamiyan valley in central Afghanistan -- took pride in the two giant Buddha statues for which their home was famous. The ancient artifacts were blown up twenty years ago by the Taliban and Ghulam recalls how he was made to take part in the detonations.

  • After Arguing With NHTSA For Four Years, GM To Recall 7 Million Vehicles

CNN reports seven million GM pickups and SUVs worldwide are being recalled. The recall centers on a defect in Japanese airbags made by now-bankrupt Takata. The defect caused the bags to explode, spraying shrapnel through the vehicle. The GM vehicles have airbags also made by Takata, which are linked to at least 17 deaths in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ordered the US recall on Monday. NHTSA rejected GM's longstanding argument that this version of the airbags didn't need to be replaced.

  • France's Macron honours WWII Resistance, 80 years after attack in the Alps

French President Emmanuel Macron is paying tribute to the heroism of members of the World War II Resistance based at a remote Alpine plateau who were attacked by the Nazi army and French collaborationist forces. Members of the resistance used the Vercors Plateau as a refuge after the occupation of France from 1940, receiving airdrops from the Allies and even occasional visits by British agents with the top-secret Special Operations Executive (SOE) unit. With 2024 marking 80 years since the penultimate year of World War II, Macron is making a series of high-profile commemorations to remember resistance heroes but also to note the role played by native French collaborationist militia (milice) in the German occupation.
