Operation Warp Speed Leader: I FAILED!

Description

General Gustave Perna is chief operating officer of Operation Warp Speed. On Saturday, he apologized for a "planning error" that caused dozens of states to expect more vaccine doses than they'll actually get. Dozens of states have said they will receive 30% to 40% fewer doses of Pfizer's vaccine next week than they were expecting. Perna said that was a result of estimates he gave for planning purposes that wound up being incorrect. "I failed," Perna said. "I am adjusting, I am fixing, and we will move forward from there."

People of any age with underlying health conditions are at higher risk for serious illness from COVID-19 infection. In addition to expanding the priority population, HHS will also be releasing the nation's "entire supply" of vaccines. As of Tuesday, just 9 million of the 25 million vaccine doses distributed had been administered.

  • States With Quickest Vaccination Rollout Will Get More Vaccines

Starting in two weeks, states with the speediest vaccine rollouts will be prioritized. The prioritization will be for additional doses, US officials announced Tuesday. The new system is meant to incentivize states to promptly record vaccinations. It will also prevent doses from sitting in freezers, says Business Insider. But it could also punish states that lack the funding or resources to accelerate vaccine administration. The strategy is set to take effect after President-elect Joe Biden takes office.

  • Fauci: The US Can Double Its Rate Of COVID-19 Vaccination Right Now

White House coronavirus task force member Dr. Anthony Fauci says the rate of vaccinations against COVID-19 should speed up soon. Business Insider reports Fauci told ABC News' Martha Raddatz on Sunday there's no reason why the US can't immunize 1 million people per day right now. If so, it would put the country on track to meet President-elect Joe Biden's goal of vaccinating 100 million people in his first 100 days in office. Fauci said that herd immunity in around 75% to 90% of the population might be achieved by the end of summer or early fall. According to Business Insider, he explained that his estimate could vary, based on how many people choose to get vaccinated.

  • Interactive CDC Map Shows Vaccine Rollout By State

The CDC unveiled an interactive vaccine-tracking map on Thursday. The map shows how many vaccine doses each state has been allocated. It also shows how many shots each has administered so far, reports Business Insider. The US fell far short of its goal to vaccinate 20 million people by the end of 2020. At its current pace, it would take the country 9 years to vaccinate the whole population. The pace must pick up in order for the vaccine to combat the virus effectively.
