Just days before a hotly contested senate runoff election, GOP Sen. David Perdue of Georgia is going into quarantine. CNN reports the Republican senator and his wife have tested negative for COVID-19. However, after coming into close contact with someone who tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the pair have chosen to self-quarantine. Perdue is campaigning in a runoff against Democrat Jon Ossoff, who has raised tens of millions of dollars in donations. Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler is also fighting to hold onto her US Senate seat in Georgia against Democrat Rev. Raphael Warnock. If Democrats win both seats, they will control the Senate next year. Any 50-50 ties will be broken by incoming Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
Democrat Jon Ossoff won the Georgia Senate runoff election against the Republican Sen. David Perdue. This win makes Ossoff the youngest Democratic senator elected since President-elect Joe Biden in 1973. The 33-year-old Ossoff is also the first millennial elected to Senate. According to Business Insider, Biden, now 78, won his first Senate seat in Delaware at the age of 30. Previously, the youngest incumbent senator was the Republican Sen. Josh Hawley, 41.

Business Insider reports that one of the pivotal issues in the Georgia campaigns was the prospect of $2,000 COVID-19 stimulus checks. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocked the $2,000 checks. Reports in December suggested that fears over Georgia prompted him to back $600 checks instead of blocking them entirely. A fierce push by President Trump for $2,000 checks put the issue back on the table. McConnell led the Senate GOP in killing the issue.

In the critical runoff election in Georgia, Democrat Jon Ossoff is vying to oust the incumbent Republican Sen. David Perdue. Now, Business Insider reports Ossoff has become the highest-funded candidate for Senate in US history. The Federal Election Commission says Ossoff raised $106.7 million between October 15 and December 16. The Democrat Rev. Raphael Warnock is running against GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler. He raised $103.3 million during the same time. The race has drawn national attention because the victors will determine whether Republicans maintain control of the Senate.
