President-elect Joe Biden unveiled a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus plan on Thursday. It includes $1,400 checks, according to Business Insider. Biden had pledged $2,000 direct payments to Americans. The $1,400 checks would be in addition to the $600 direct payments provided most recently. This would be welcomed funds as more and more Americans face eviction and hunger. Most developed countries worldwide have been supporting their citizens with funds since last March.
The House of Representatives will vote on Monday on a measure to increase stimulus checks. The increase will be for Americans under a certain income level to receive $2,000 in payment. This comes after Trump signed a sweeping coronavirus relief bill into law Sunday evening. That legislation, which was negotiated on a bipartisan basis, provides for $600 in direct payments. After the deal was brokered and passed out of Congress, Trump railed against the amount. CNN reports he said it is too low, prompting House Democrats to push for an increase.
On Sunday, Republicans and Democrats in Congress agreed upon a new $900 billion coronavirus relief bill. This includes sending out the second round of stimulus checks for adults. That's half the amount of the first round of stimulus checks in April. According to Insider polling, 62% of respondents believe that the $600 checks are too little. Additionally, 76% of respondents said the payments should be greater than $1,000. 43% said the checks should be $2,000 or more.
Trump threatened late Tuesday to veto the $892 billion coronavirus relief bill approved by Congress. This may delay aid for millions on the cusp of eviction and about to lose unemployment benefits. Trump said the bill did not provide enough support for small businesses. He also asked Congress to increase stimulus checks to individuals to $2,000. He called the current offer of $600 for most Americans “ridiculously low”. Nancy Pelosi agrees with Trump and many Democrats are on board to increase the stimulus checks.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is now backing $600 COVID-19 stimulus checks. What changed his mind? Business Insider reports that opposing stimulus checks was hurting them in Georgia, according to The New York Times. Citing a private call, the NY Times said McConnel described said Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue "getting hammered" on the issue. The Georgia runoffs on January 5 will decide the balance of power in the Senate. Checks of $1,200 were sent out earlier in the year. The checks dropped off the radar in the latest negotiations until coming roaring back this week.
