  • Belgian hospitality industry demands more aid after months of closures

Brussels, Mar 15 (EFE) .- (Camera: Leo Rodríguez) Dozens of owners and workers of the hospitality industry, the leisure sector and fairgrounds demonstrated this Wednesday in Brussels to demand more aid from the Belgian authorities and ask to be allowed to work, a year after the first leisure closures in the country tried to stop the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.FOOTAGE OF THE PROTEST IN BRUSSELSSOUNDBITES OF CARL DE MONCHARLINE, PROTEST SPOKESMAN, AND SALVATORE BUONGIORNO, RESTAURANT OWNER1. Right now in Brussels we have about 20 euros of aid per closing day, it is not normal. For example, there is a restaurant in Brussels that has received 7,000 euros of aid, another in Wallonia 12,000 and another in Flanders has received 73,000. There is a difference which is not acceptable. ""We ask for a help of 15 percent of our billing and to open as quickly as possible, always respecting the rules, sanitary protocols and disinfection."2. "I have a restaurant and I am a simple hotelier who is tired of following sanitary directives that do not make any sense and that are incoherent"."I believe that we will not open in May, they say yes but I am afraid that is not the case. That is why we will demonstrate. Later they will tell us that the level of infections increases and that we will have to wait ... In the end we will open when schools close in the summer since they don't want contamination to skyrocket, but this is not my problem. To date, it has not yet been proven that restaurants transmit the virus. ""Luckily I'm not bankrupt yet but we can't go on like this for more months. Do you know a company that doesn't earn money for 12 months and survives?"
