West African military chiefs meet in Ghana to coordinate a possible armed intervention aimed at reversing the coup in Niger. IMAGES
An Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) envoy says the bloc has "expressed concern over the resurgence of coup d'etats in the region, in non consensual, constitutional reform processes in some member states", during a press conference held in Lagos. Goodluck Jonathan adds "this impacts on peace, security and stability in the region." SOUNDBITE
West African leaders began a key summit to address the latest coup in the region. Emergency talks in the Ghanaian capital Accra were triggered after Burkina Faso on January 24 became the third member of the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to be overtaken by the military in less than two years - which Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo calls 'of grave concern' in his opening statement. The president of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, addresses West African heads of state who have gathered in Abuja to hold an extraordinary summit on Niger, following a coup d'état in the country. The summit follows an announcement overnight by Niger's military regime that they had formed a new government. ECOWAS says it has not ruled out military intervention in order to reinstate overthrown president Mohamed Bazoum. "We gather with profound sense of urgency and firm determination" says the president. The new self-proclaimed leader of the military junta ruling Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, parades in the streets of Ouagadougou and hails the cheering crowd. IMAGES
Protesters and the military, who claim to have taken power in Burkina Faso, head for the national television station in the capital Ouagadougou. In the same area of the city, demonstrators gather in front of the French embassy, setting fire to barriers and throwing stones inside the building while some wave Russian flags. IMAGES
