President Joe Biden will deliver his annual State of the Union speech before Congress on February 7, the White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tells reporters during a briefing. The new Speaker of the House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, sent a "kind invitation and the president has accepted it and looks forward to delivering the State of the Union," Jean-Pierre says. On Sunday, Sen. Mitt Romney publicly criticized President Donald Trump's continued efforts to undermine and delegitimize the 2020 election. Romney said there were many things Trump could be doing, like heralding the success of the COVID vaccine. Romney is dismayed that Trump has chosen to focus on overturning the election. "It's really sad and in a lot of respects embarrassing," he said. Romney said Trump is leaving Washington "with a whole series of conspiracy theories." "Things that are so nutty and loopy that people are shaking their heads, wondering what in the world has gotten into this man."
Hundreds of Bernie Sanders supporters gathered in Vermont Park, outside Philadelphia on Sunday, to hold a rally in support of the Senator just before the Democratic National Convention, despite the fact that Sanders has already endorsed Clinton. The crowd heard impassioned speeches from actors Susan Sarandon and Danny Glover, who backed Sanders throughout his ultimately unsuccessful bid for Democratic presidential nomination.
