French police intervened to clear demonstrators from a central Paris square where a crowd of thousands had gathered in front of parliament to protest President Emmanuel Macron's government imposing a controversial pensions overhaul without a parliament vote. Lines of police with shields and batons drawn advanced towards the square, while others fired water cannon after a fire was lit in the middle of the square. IMAGES

Charlie Hebdo lawyer Richard Malka and Hyper Cacher hero Lassana Bathily arrive at the Paris court on the first day of the appeal trial of two alleged supporters of the 2015 attackers. Ali Riza Polat, a 37-year-old Franco-Turkish man who faces the heaviest charges and a life sentence, had marked the first "historic" hearing with his outbursts and invective.
