  • Hell to Pay! Devils Whip Faithful to Cleanse Sins in El Salvador Festival

Those of us worried about our spiritual futures turn to religious rituals to help us prepare for the afterlife, but some believers in the El Salvadorian town of Texistepeque have taken that idea to another level. Welcome to the Talciguines festival, where demons literally whip your sins away. The Talciguines festival draws tourists and locals alike to stand in the crowd and wait for participants dressed as 'demons' to strike them with leather whips in order to 'banish their sins.' Talciguines is a theatrical tradition that is meant to represent the battle between 'good and evil.' Forty-five men dress up in red robes, meant to represent 'the devil' or 'demons.' Following a church service the participants go out into the streets, where they proceed to whip people. Following the whipping, another man, dressed as Jesus Christ, performs with 'the demons,' walking over their prostrate bodies to represent the cleansing of their sins. The practice of enduring suffering on earth in order to attain redemption, salvation, or other spiritual rewards is known as asceticism, and has served as a tenet in many religions, including Christianity. However, when people perform bodily harm to themselves or allow others to harm them, this practice is known as unnatural ascetism. The festival is a part of a holy Easter week in El Salvador and attracts thousands of people from all over the world.

  • Between a Rock and an Art Place - Frenchman Emerges After Week Inside a Stone

An eager audience of spectators looked on as French artist Abraham Poincheval emerged from the centre of a 12-tonne rock at the Palais de Tokyo art museum in Paris on Tuesday. The artist had been entombed for a week in the custom-built stone, remaining in the same sitting position without moving for a whole seven days. Poincheval designed the rock himself so that he could sit upright while encased but also receive air, water and soup directly to his mouth regularly through several small openings in the stone. What was it like to be trapped in one position for an entire week? Poincheval had this to say about his unusual forced meditation experience. The 44-year-old is no stranger to forcing himself to sit still in small spaces for long periods of time. Poincheval spent two weeks trapped inside a stuffed bear after some assistants sewed him shut. His next project involves him becoming a human hen - he will hatch eggs by sitting on them for weeks at a time.

  • Want Good Luck for 2017? Try Rubbing this Hairy Armadillo in Your Face!

2016 was a year filled with major and unexpected changes, and some people are turning to old rituals and traditions in the hope that 2017 will turn out better. People in Peru have their own New Years good luck ritual, and it basically involves allowing a shaman to rub a hairy armadillo all over their body. People flocked to the "Wishes Fair" in the Peruvian capital of Lima over the weekend so that shamans could perform rituals to cleanse them of their bad vibes and to bring prosperity in the New Year. Native healers known as Curanderas cleansed some visitors by rubbing an Andean hairy armadillo on their hair, chest, and face. Other rituals offered by the native healers included showering customers with flower petals, which promised to purify the body and free the owner from envy and bad thoughts. Visitors could also buy fake money to place on the deity Ekeko, the Tiwanakan god of abundance and prosperity, to attract good fortune in the New Year. Many of the traditions of the people of the Andes mountains have survived from the times of the Incas and shamans living in the mountains pass on their rituals by word of mouth. This area has been home to many mysterious ancient cultures which have left behind ruins that continue to puzzle archaeologists to this day. 2017 is finally here and the new year is set to be every bit as unpredictable as its predecessor. Peruvian people are turning to ancient rituals to make sure that they have blessings and good fortune for the new year, what are you doing to prepare?
