Kurds in Syria, Turkey celebrate Persian New Year

Description

Kurds perform traditional dances during celebrations of Nowruz, the Persian New Year in the Afrin region of Syria's rebel-held northern Aleppo and in the Kurdish-majority city of Qamishli. Meanwhile in Turkey, hundreds of thousands of Kurds flock to the Newroz celebration venue in Diyarbakir, known as the country's heartland of the Kurds, for a demonstration organised by the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP). The Persian New Year is an ancient Zoroastrian tradition celebrated by Iranians and Kurds. It coincides with the spring equinox and is calculated by the solar calendar.
