Opera made its debut in Riyadh at the weekend with a classic Arabian love story, as bands from Beirut to New Orleans performed at the kingdom's first-ever jazz festival.
Saudi Arabia's second ever Comic-Con event, the first one to take place in the capital Riyadh, opened this week, attracting geeks and sci-fi, fantasy, anime, and pop culture aficionados and featuring guests like American actor Jason Momoa. The kingdom in recent months has organised concerts, its first Comic-Con festival in the Red Sea city of Jeddah (in February) and a mixed-gender national day celebration.
Female DJs are increasingly the stars of concerts and private parties across Saudi Arabia, an unthinkable phenomenon just a few years ago in the traditionally ultraconservative kingdom. Lujain Albishi, who performs under the name biirdperson, started experimenting on DJ decks during the pandemic. Her big break came last year when she was invited to perform at MDLBeast Soundstorm, a festival in the capital Riyadh that drew more than 700,000 revellers for performances including a set by superstar French DJ David Guetta.
