Former Ivory Coast rugby star on working as janitor during Covid-19 pandemic

Baky Meïté is a former captain of the Ivory Coast rugby team. Back in the spring of 2020, he put his rugby career on hold to work as a janitor in a geriatric hospital in Paris. He has now published a book, "Les Chiffons Bleus", as a tribute to his former colleagues who appear somewhat forgotten today. He joined us for Perspective.

  • LA County Suspends Air Quality Regs Due To COVID-19 Corpse 'Backlog'

    Los Angeles County, California, will no longer be subjected to air quality regulations limiting the number of cremations that may be performed there. Business Insider reports the South Coast Air Quality Management District said the regulation was lifted so officials could handle a 'backlog' of bodies. Business Insider reports the move comes as a grim reminder of the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic in California. The regulation has been lifted for 10 days, with the option to be extended. As of January 15, there were more than 2,700 bodies being stored at hospitals in LA County and at the Coroner's office.   • Democrats Working On New Stimulus Package

    The Washing Post is reporting that on Monday top Democrats approached the GOP's Mitch Connell with a secretive COVID-19 stimulus bill proposal. According to Business Insider the move came just before lawmakers unveiled a bipartisan $908 billion proposal. The new stimulus moderately increases proposed GOP spending. Speaker Pelosi said that the "private" proposal was also sent to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. On Tuesday, McConnell appeared to settle on a version close to the GOP's original demands for a small stimulus bill.

  • Amazon Contractor Forces Workers To Choose: Catch COVID-19 Or Starve To Death

    Employees of a call center contractor for Amazon are complaining of dangerous working conditions in the city of Cebu, in the Philippines. Business Insider reports workers say they're being forced to make an impossible choice: either become infected with COVID-19--or starve. The contractor, Teleperformance, provides call center services for Amazon's Ring video doorbell products. Dozens of the call center's employees have developed flu-like symptoms, which are characteristic of COVID-19 infection. As public transport has been shut down in Cebu, workers were sleeping on the floor at work so as not to arrive late for their shifts. Workers say that workstations aren't properly sanitized, and when shifts overlap, or when staff sleep on the floor, it's difficult to socially distance. Workers allege that cleaners come through sporadically and when they do, it's with a bucket of water and a towel. People are scared because we don't know who has it and who doesn't have it.
