Gazans prepare for Ramadan in dire economic situation

Russia's Ukraine invasion, which has already exacerbated food woes in parts of Africa and the Middle East, is marring preparations for the holy month of Ramadan and forcing a turn to frugal iftar sunset meals. "The Gaza Strip lives on the aid that comes from European and donor countries, but today, these countries are focusing on Ukraine," says Gaza resident Zayed Khader, adding that "There is great suffering because there is no money."

Grass jelly is known as 'cincau' in Indonesian and is made by boiling the stalks and leaves of Mesona chinensis, usually consumed with sugar water, syrup, coconut milk, and ice.
