Production of batteries for all-electric vehicles based on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electrification Toolkit (MEB) is underway at ŠKODA AUTO’s main plant in Mladá Boleslav.
"Stellantis Spotlight" is a weekly recap of some of the major stories at Stellantis. The top stories for the 2022 year in review include making investments in battery production plants, revealing products such as the 2023 Wagoneer L and Dodge Hornet, and looking toward the future with plans for electrifying more products.
Local battery production is an important success factor for Mercedes-Benz AG’s electric offensive and the key element to flexibly and efficiently meet the global demand for electrified vehicles. The company is, therefore, focusing on establishing a global battery production network and is investing more than one billion EUR to this end. The network will consist of nine battery factories at seven locations in Europe, North America, and Asia. Mercedes-Benz’s wholly-owned subsidiary Accumotive in Kamenz, Saxony will play a special role in this. As the competence center for the global battery production network, it has been producing drivetrain batteries for electric and electrified vehicles from Mercedes-Benz and smart as well as light commercial vehicles since 2012. After the second plant – designed from the outset to be CO2-neutral – went into operation in 2018, the Mercedes-Benz subsidiary successively increased its production capacities and volumes. The annual production volume will soon exceed half a million battery systems for hybrid, plug-in hybrid and purely electric vehicles. The plant is also preparing for the next milestone of the product and technology brand EQ, which will also offer electric variants in the compact segment.
The Q6 e-tron series, built in Ingolstadt, is the first fully electric high-volume model manufactured at a German Audi site. Simultaneously, the brand with the four rings is consolidating new skills and technologies at its company headquarters with the assembly of the newly developed high-voltage (HV) battery for the Premium Platform Electric (PPE). Thanks to the new battery assembly, Audi is gradually increasing the vertical range of manufacture for fully electric models and gathering experience for battery module production further down the line.
Electrification continues at BMW Group Plant Leipzig: Four months after launching production of the combustion-engined MINI Countryman, the all-electric version is now rolling off the lines at Leipzig as well. After phasing out production of the BMW i3, the birthplace of electric mobility at the BMW Group has welcomed another fully electric car to its range. It now manufactures four models with three drive types by two brands, all on a single production line: the BMW 1 Series, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (including the plug-in hybrid version), the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe and the MINI Countryman in both its fully electric and combustion-powered versions. The MINI Countryman Electric represents a major step in the MINI brand’s transition to full electrification by 2030 and combines an electrified go-kart feel with zero local emissions mobility. It comes in two fully electric variants: the Countryman E and the more powerful all-wheel Countryman SE ALL4.
