Ukraine's forces will have to retreat from Severodonetsk, a regional governor said Friday, after weeks of fierce fighting against Russian forces in the battleground eastern city.
It's not the sort of news that Ukrainian officials wanted to hear. The last bridge linking the eastern city of Severodonetsk with Ukrainian-controlled territory to the west has been destroyed. This comes as bloody street battles continue in the besieged city, with scores of civilians remaining stranded under unrelenting bombardment. This is all happening as French President Emmanuel Macron is visiting neighbouring Romania and then Moldova. We ask our panel what his trip means.
Heavy Russian bombardment of Ukraine's battleground eastern Lugansk region and key city Severodonetsk has been "hell" for soldiers there, Kyiv said Wednesday, while insisting that defenders would hold on "as long as necessary".
