NATO forces cross the Vistula River at Korzeniewo in Poland as part of the US-led defence alliance's Exercise Dragon 24, involving around 4,500 soldiers and almost 1,000 vehicles. Dragon 24 is itself part of Exercise Steadfast Defender 24, NATO's largest military exercise since the Cold War, which is designed to test its defences in the face of Russia's war on Ukraine. IMAGES
Speaking ahead of the NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warns that Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine could last "for many months, for even years". SOUNDBITE
European Council President Charles Michel warns that the coming weeks could decide the course of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He makes the statement following a meeting between European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. "The next few weeks and months will probably be decisive. This is not the time to tremble, this is the time to be lucid and this is the time to deploy maximum support," Michel says. SOUNDBITE
Russian President Vladimir Putin wants "to use winter as a weapon of war" in his Ukrainian operation, says NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Bucharest, ahead of a meeting with the alliance's foreign ministers. A weapon based on Russia's attempt "to deprive the Ukrainians of water, electricity, light and heating" says Stoltenberg. SOUNDBITE
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg urges the alliance's leaders heading to a summit in Madrid to keep up their backing for Ukraine as it faces "a brutality which we haven't seen in Europe since the Second World War." SOUNDBITE
