The battles currently being fought in eastern Ukraine could determine the whole country's fate, a Ukrainian defence ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.
The Ukrainian resistance in Irpin played a key role in holding off the Russian advance on the capital Kyiv during the first few weeks of the war. But the middle-class commuter town paid a heavy price. More than 300 civilians were killed and tens of thousands fled. Now, more than a month after the Russian withdrawal, residents are beginning to return to try to rebuild their lives. Reconstruction is slowly getting under way, but an estimated €800 million is needed to build new homes. FRANCE 24's Nadia Massih, Bastien Renouil and Raïd Abu Zaideh report from Irpin.
Widespread destruction was seen in a town in the Kyiv Oblast, following the withdrawal of Russian forces from the region, official drone footage released on Wednesday, April 6, showed.
At least 200 people have been killed in the Kyiv suburb of Irpin since Russia invaded Ukraine, its mayor said Wednesday, adding that half the town had been destroyed and it was unsafe for residents to return. Ukraine said the commuter town was "liberated" from Russian forces on Monday. FRANCE 24's Cyril Payen tells us more.
While frequent explosions can be heard coming from the direction of the suburban town of Irpin, to the northwest of Kyiv, Ukrainian forces have said they are in control of the town but emergency services believe that it is still too dangerous for civilians.View on euronews
