'We are receiving so many threats and I can see people following us, but I’m not scared of them,' says one of several women barred from school in southern India for wearing an Islamic headscarf. Protests against the ban have spread across the country, as fellow-Muslim women argue they can make their own decisions.
IN THE PAPERS - Wednesday, February 9: There's unrest in India after students wearing headscarves are banned from classrooms in the state of Karnataka. For one newspaper, it's a worrying preview of PM Narendra Modi's increasingly nationalist and anti-Muslim agenda, 20 years after he was accused of turning a blind eye to Muslim killings as head of the state of Gujarat. Protests over a ban on Islamic headscarves have intensified at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College in India's southern state of Karnataka, where groups of students sporting saffron shawls have raised slogans against those wearing the hijab.
"They exclude us, whereas the fundamental values of football and sport are to unite and to come together," said Founé Diawara, co-president of the collective 'Les Hijabeuses'.
The Taliban stage a demonstration with around 300 men, chanting "We want Sharia law" and "We want the hijab, even if we die for it". The crowd accuses women's rights activists who have taken to the streets in recent weeks of being hired "mercenaries", especially after they stamped on a burqa during a recent protest.
