Queen Elizabeth II has 'ensured relative peace and stability during her reign'

Description

Joining FRANCE 24 is Rosa Freedman, Human Rights Activist and Professor of Law, Conflict and Global Development at the University of Reading. She describes Queen Elizabeth as very "popular and, let's be clear, she's the figurehead of the country." During the 96-year-old monarch's historic reign, she "has seen so much change in the world and society, and yet strengthened the Commonwealth and ensured relative peace and stability." Dr. Freedman highlights the fact that the queen is "seen very differently to the way that her children are seen by the British public." The British monarchy has certainly faced its share of serious challenges to its reputation prior to Queen Elizabeth's reign. But in recent years, the Royal Family's image has been tarnished by various high-profile controversies ranging from their "treatment" of the "People's Princess" Lady Diana, to their very public falling out with Prince Harry and Megan Markle, exacerbated by accusations of racism and classism leveled at Royal Family members, to Prince Andrew's association with Jeffrey Epstein, including lurid accusations of sexual assault that led to a multimillion-dollar civil suit settlement. Dr. Freedman describes the Prince Andrew scandal as "just a symptom of the problem in this country where the privileged and the elite think that they can do anything and that they can get away with anything. We see the same from our prime minister who is from the same class, and went to the same schools, as [the queen's] grandchildren went to."
