Business Insider reports Norwegian deputy central bank governor Jon Nicolaisen resigned on Friday. Nicolaisen was in charge of Norway's $1.2 trillion sovereign wealth fund, the biggest in the world. He stepped down after Norway's security service rejected his security clearance because his wife is Chinese and lives in China. The pair have been married for ten years, but Norway has become stricter on ties to China and Russia in recent years. Norway's intelligence service says the two countries are trying to find out information about Norway's petroleum industry.
During a press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart in the city of Uzhhorod, western Ukraine, Hungarian foreign minister Peter Szijjarto says that Hungary is "ready for further collaboration" with Ukraine but that there "is still a long way to go". Relations between the two neighbouring countries have been strained over the past few years and were further aggravated when Orban in December vetoed 50 billion euros ($54 billion) in EU aid for Kyiv. Ukraine's top diplomat calls for the UN Security Council to convene an emergency meeting following the partial destruction of the strategically important Russian-held Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine. "Ukraine calls an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council and brings the issue of the Russian terrorist act to the International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors," Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba says in a statement. Speaking at a press conference alongside the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, reveals a new round of sanctions against Moscow over its latest "escalation" in Ukraine. The new sanctions include a cap on the price of Russian oil and a ban on exports from the country worth seven billion euros ($7 billion). The announcement comes as the Kremlin-installed leaders of Russian-held regions in Ukraine have been claiming victory in what Von der Leyen describes as "sham" referendums on joining the Russian Federation. As he arrives at a summit of EU leaders, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban warns that the bloc has yet to come up with a compromise that could see him back an embargo on Russian oil. European diplomats have drafted a statement proposing that Hungary receive a temporary exemption from the ban, and hope it will be adopted at the two-day Brussels meeting. SOUNDBITE
