Italian firefighters battle wildfires on the island of Sicily, with one wildfire getting so close to Palermo airport that it shut down for several hours on Tuesday morning. A heatwave has hung over the south of Italy, with the island's civil protection agency reporting a temperature of 47.6 degrees Celsius (117 degrees Celsius) in Catania on July 24.
Firefighters work to tackle wildfires on Italy's Adriatic coast and in the Sicily region after more than 800 flare-ups were recorded in the country in one weekend. EU data show this year's fire season has been significantly more destructive than most, with experts saying that climate change is increasing both the frequency and intensity of such blazes.
After 2 weeks of devastating wildfires ravaging Greece, the blazes are beginning to show signs of dying down. However, firefighters remain on alert, battling flareups across the country.
