At the UN General Assembly, 185 countries have voted in favor of the United States ending its economic, commercial and financial embargo on Cuba that has been in force for 60 years -- the thirtieth such moral victory at the UN for Cuba. Havana, Oct 22 (EFE).- The US economic embargo cost the Cuban economy $5.57 billion over the 12 months that ended March 31, the island's government said Thursday, blasting the United States for ratcheting up punitive measures despite the Covid-19 pandemic.STATEMENTS FROM Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez:"The blockage of that time caused losses in Cuba of around 5.57 billion dollars. It is the first time that the blockade caused more than $5 billion in a year calculated with a methodology verified by institutions in the United States. The cumulative cost of the embargo since it was imposed in 1962 is $144.41 billionm a truly overwhelming burden" for an economy the size of Cuba's."
The U.S. abstains on a historic vote at the United Nations to end the embargo on Cuba, but many acknowledge that real change will only come when the U.S. Congress follows suit. Diane Hodges reports.
