Smoke billows after an apparent Russian airstrike hit Kyiv's main television tower in the heart of the Ukrainian capital, knocking out some state broadcasting but leaving the structure intact. Russian police detain several prominent reporters as they protest against the arrest of an investigative journalist on drugs charges in front of the Moscow police headquarters. Ivan Golunov, a reporter with Meduza independent news site, was detained in central Moscow on Thursday and police have opened an investigation into manufacturing and dealing drugs. NATO forces cross the Vistula River at Korzeniewo in Poland as part of the US-led defence alliance's Exercise Dragon 24, involving around 4,500 soldiers and almost 1,000 vehicles. Dragon 24 is itself part of Exercise Steadfast Defender 24, NATO's largest military exercise since the Cold War, which is designed to test its defences in the face of Russia's war on Ukraine. IMAGES
The United States says that a Russian ban on US-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty shows Moscow's efforts to deny open information. "It is quite clear that they do not want their people to have information about what the Russian regime does abroad, what the Russian regime does to its own people," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller tells reporters. Images show Evan Gershkovich leaving court after his detention was extended by two months. Gershkovich, an American Wall Street Journal reporter is being held in Moscow on espionage charges which he denies. The court hearing was attended by representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Russia. He was arrested during a reporting trip at the end of March last year in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg and could spend up to 20 years in prison if convicted. IMAGES
