The first person charged under Hong Kong's national security law was found guilty on Tuesday of terrorism and inciting secession in a landmark case with long-term implications for how the legislation reshapes the city's common law traditions.
Hong Kong, Jul 6 (EFE/EPA).- The first person charged under Hong Kong’s new national security law on Monday remained in police custody after a court rejected his bail application. Tong Ying-kit, 23, is the first person charged under the new national security law for inciting secession and terrorism during the July 1 protest. The defendant faces charges of terrorism and subversion of state power (a crime commonly used in China against activists and dissidents), two of the four crimes typified in the new regulations.The 23-year-old man was driving his motorcycle down a narrow street when a group of riot police hit the road, and ended up running over three of them before falling to the ground, according to a video of the events published by the press. The controversial law is seen by Hong Kong lawyers and activists as the possible end to the rights and freedoms enjoyed in the city against the rest of China, although the local government insists that it will only affect an "extremely small minority" of people.
