  • Palestinians buy livestock ahead of Eid al-Adha

Hebron, Jul 16 (EFE/EPA).- Palestinians in the city of Hebron gathered to buy livestock Friday morning in preparation for Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of the Sacrifice, one of the holiest holidays in the Islamic calendar. The festival commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim' willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail as a sign of submission to Allah and also marks the Hajj, the yearly Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, the holiest site in Islam. To mark the date, Muslims traditionally sacrifice a sheep, goat or cow and divide the meat into three, donating one-third to family, another to friends and neighbors and a final third to the poor and needy. For Palestinian artist Taqi Spateen, a stroll along the Israeli-built barrier that runs through parts of Bethlehem amounts to an open-air exhibition of his murals denouncing Israel's occupation. Spateen's work fills much of the concrete outside secretive artist Banksy's Walled-Off Hotel, a now iconic section of the barrier which Israel constructed to cut off the West Bank from the Jewish state.
