  • Sánchez: "The last 20 years in Afghanistan has not been in vain for the international community"

Madrid, Aug 21 (EFE).- The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, assured this Saturday that the 20 years of NATO's international mission in Afghanistan have not "been in vain" even though the Taliban have taken power because he has "sown a seed" and hopes that in the future it will germinate. SOUNDBITES OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE GOVERNMENT OF SPAIN, PEDRO SÁNCHEZ IN SPANISH:TRANSLATION:"The last 20 years in Afghanistan, despite the complexity and drama of the images that we are seeing in Kabul, has not been in vain for the international community. The international community has deployed resources, energy, as well as material capacities so that, little by little, the stability of prosperity and development could be guaranteed. I want to state that during these last 20 years, in these last 15 years, in particular, we have taken over a very important province, Badghis. When we got there there were no roads, there were no clinics, there were no hospitals, there were no educational centers, girls and boys did not go to school, especially girls. During these last 15 years, thanks to everyone's efforts, we have built hospitals, we have built clinics. We have guaranteed that drinking water could be provided to the citizens of that province. In short, we have sowed seeds and we hope that in the future these seeds will grow into greater prosperity, greater security and greater freedom for the population".
