Hong Kong police arrest Chow Hang-tung, a barrister and one of the leaders of the Hong Kong Alliance, which organised the city's Tiananmen Square candlelight vigils. Four members of the group were made a day after the group declared they would refuse to cooperate with a national security investigation into their activities. The Alliance is being investigated under the powerful national security law that China imposed on Hong Kong to stamp out dissent after huge democracy protests broke out two years ago. ++ SEE ALSO: VIDI9MD2Z4_EN ++
Hong Kong police detained prominent democracy activist Chow Hang-tung on Friday morning, with authorities determined to prevent any protests on the anniversary of Beijing's deadly Tiananmen crackdown. IMAGES
Thousands have gathered in vigils all across Hong Kong to mark the 31st anniversary of the repression of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, even though the gathering was declared illegal by local authorities. If they were mostly peaceful, an explosive device has been discovered next to the Beijing liaison office, the Hong Kong police announced, adding that protesters were also arrested, as FRANCE 24’s Hong Kong correspondent Oliver Farry reports.
The arrests come as authorities crackdown on dissent in the semi-autonomous Chinese city.

Hong Kong Police raided the museum commemorating Beijing's deadly crackdown on Tiananmen Square in 1989, a day after they arrested four members of the group that ran the venue.
