Border force staff go about their days and boats navigate in and out at the port of Dover after at least four people died when a small boat apparently packed with migrants capsized in freezing temperatures in the Channel overnight, according to the UK government. Dozens of others were plucked from the waters of one of the world's busiest shipping lanes in a large-scale rescue operation involving UK and French emergency services. IMAGES

The British authorities have increased navy and air surveillance in the area as more than 1,000 migrants have arrived on Britain's shores in the last 10 days after crossing the Channel in small boats.
