On a trip to Calais, French Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin calls for a "very tough, coordinated, international response" after the death of at least 31 migrants in the Channel and called on other European countries concerned to fight against smugglers "like we fight against terrorists". British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tells the House of Commons he has "absolute conviction" in his government's plan to send migrants to Rwanda ahead of a vote in parliament on the bill which has exposed schisms in his ruling Conservative party. The Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill, if passed, will compel judges to treat Rwanda as a safe third country and proposes giving UK ministers powers to disregard sections of international and British human rights legislation. Russia's tanks stand poised on "Europe's Ukrainian lawn", British defence minister Grant Shapps warns, in a wide-ranging speech outlining the United Kingdom's security priorities. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the world has "come full circle, moving from a post-war to pre-war world," Shapps adds, raising the alarm at an increasingly unstable security situation amidst Israel's war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, increasing attacks on Red Sea shipping by Yemen's Huthi rebels and Moscow's ongoing invasion of its pro-Western neighbour. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says that he will "not allow" the European Court of Human Rights to block flights deporting illegal migrants to Rwanda from the UK, under a new bill being introduced in parliament. Previous attempts to send migrants to Rwanda have been stymied by court rulings against the UK government, and the prime minister is now under pressure from his own party to come up with a working policy to deter illegal migration.
