The European Union says it has allocated 20 million euros ($21.8 million) worth of humanitarian aid to Haiti after gang violence plunged the Caribbean country into renewed chaos. "An unprecedented level of gang violence is dramatically increasing humanitarian needs across the country. Port-au-Prince, Aug 15 (EFE).- Haitian authorities on Sunday raised to 1,297 the death toll in the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the country on the weekend.Civil Protection reported that 1,054 people are known to have died in the Sud Department, another 122 in Nippes and 119 in Grand'Anse, all of these provinces on the country's slender southwestern peninsula, while another two people lost their lives in northwest Haiti.Meanwhile, the Venezuelan government on Sunday sent the beleaguered nation 30 tons of supplies, including food, medicine and potable water, to help the general populace after the powerful Saturday quake that injured at least 2,800 people. Port-au-Prince, Aug 16 (EFE) .- (CAMERA: Orlando Barria and Maria Montecelos) The Haitian Government promised to speed up rescue operations and care for the victims of the devastating earthquake last Saturday, which so far it has left almost 1,300 dead and 5,700 injured.
Residents of Mexico City described their ordeals the morning after a deadly earthquake on Wednesday killed over 200 people and destroyed several dozen buildings. One survivor described how she was unable to escape her apartment and could only look on in horror as the quake shook the building. A different resident was able to leave her apartment, but feared for her life in doing so.
A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck central Mexico, destroying several buildings in the country's capital of Mexico City and leaving over 240 people dead on Tuesday. Emergency services carried out rescue operations as they searched for survivors trapped in the surrounding buildings. Tuesday's earthquake comes just a matter of weeks after an 8.1 magnitude quake also struck central Mexico and killed nearly 100 people, mainly in the city of Oaxaca.
