Funeral held for Mexican migrants killed in Texas trailer tragedy

In the Mexican state of Veracruz, family and friends bid farewell to brothers Jair Valencia Olivares (19), Yovani Valencia Olivares (16) and their cousin Misael Olivares (16), who were among the migrants found dead after being abandoned in a sweltering tractor-trailer in San Antonio, Texas. Mexicans were the largest group of victims in this tragedy, which left 53 dead in total, including citizens of Honduras and Guatemala.

    Forty-six people were found dead after being abandoned in a tractor-trailer in the sweltering Texas heat in the latest tragedy to claim the lives of migrants smuggled across the border from Mexico to the US. Sixteen people were hospitalized, including four children. It’s among the deadliest of the tragedies that have claimed thousands of lives in recent decades as people attempt to cross the US border from Mexico. "The United States is deeply entangled in many structural problems which cause these long-standing patterns of migration," explains Dr. Booth.
