Countries in Southern Africa have agreed to deploy forces to help quell a bloody jihadist insurgency wreaking havoc in northern Mozambique over the past three years. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) bloc "approved" the deployment of the "SADC Standby Force in support of Mozambique to combat of terrorism and acts of violent extremism in Cabo Delgado," the bloc's executive secretary Stergomena Tax says at the end of a one day summit. An Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) envoy says the bloc has "expressed concern over the resurgence of coup d'etats in the region, in non consensual, constitutional reform processes in some member states", during a press conference held in Lagos. Goodluck Jonathan adds "this impacts on peace, security and stability in the region." SOUNDBITE
Heads of state belonging to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) gather for the organisation's 41st annual summit, this year hosted by Malawi in the capital Lilongwe. Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera is the new Chairperson of SADC, taking over from Filipe Nyusi, President of Mozambique. IMAGES
