European Council President Charles Michel warns that the coming weeks could decide the course of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He makes the statement following a meeting between European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. "The next few weeks and months will probably be decisive. This is not the time to tremble, this is the time to be lucid and this is the time to deploy maximum support," Michel says. SOUNDBITE
UN chief Antonio Guterres warns that he fears the likelihood of further escalation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict means the world is heading towards a "wider war." "The prospects for peace keep diminishing. The chances of further escalation and bloodshed keep growing," he added as explained his 2023 priorities plan to the UN General Assembly. SOUNDBITE
Russian President Vladimir Putin wants "to use winter as a weapon of war" in his Ukrainian operation, says NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Bucharest, ahead of a meeting with the alliance's foreign ministers. A weapon based on Russia's attempt "to deprive the Ukrainians of water, electricity, light and heating" says Stoltenberg. SOUNDBITE
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg says that Ukraine's western backers are looking to provide Kyiv with more air defences to protect against Russia's "indiscriminate" missile attacks across the country. "We will address how to ramp up support for Ukraine and the top priority will be more air defence for Ukraine," Stoltenberg says at the start of a meeting by Ukraine's allies on arms supplies to Kyiv.
