Following the violent attack on the US Capitol, federal officials launched the most extensive counterterrorism probe since September 11, 2001. Meanwhile, the heads of the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security--and the President himself--have remained essentially silent. But according to CNN, the Federal Bureau of Investigation means business. And FBI Director Christopher Wray doesn't mind saying so. Wray says the agency is monitoring 'extensive' online chatter about future protests and warned the men and women who wreaked havoc on the Capitol. The NY Times reports that Pres. Elect Joe Biden plans to keep Christopher Wray on as FBI Director. A senior Biden official told The Times Biden was "not removing the FBI director unless Trump fired him." Business Insider speculated the move is part of the Biden team's broader effort to restore trust intelligence and justice systems. The institutions which have been in place to protect Americans has become overtly politicized under the Trump administration.
US President Donald Trump continues to falsely insist that the election was stolen from him. However, his campaign has lost more than two dozen lawsuits seeking to contest the results and halt ballot counting and certification. According to Business Insider, he's also lost two recounts in Georgia and in Wisconsin. Recently, Trump accused the US Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation of failing to help him uncover systemic voter fraud. But Attorney General Bill Barr begged to differ with Trump on Tuesday, claiming the DOJ and FBI have no evidence of substantial fraud in the 2020 election. Barr's break with Trump is particularly notable given that he has been in lockstep with Trump's narrative for months. Barr pushed a baseless theory that expanding mail voting would lead to foreign countries flooding American voters with counterfeit mail ballots.
President Donald Trump on Sunday pointed the finger of blame for losing to President-elect Joe Biden at two federal agencies. Business Insider reports Trump said in a Fox News interview he believed the FBI and the Department of Justice may have tried to steal the election from him. Business Insider reports there is neither evidence to support such an accusation, nor evidence to support his baseless claims of voter fraud in the election. The president offered no evidence of his claim during his interview on Fox Business News on Sunday. Trump also complained that the agencies weren't doing enough to prove his unsubstantiated claims, saying they were 'missing in action.'
Business Insider reports the Federal Bureau of Investigation had its eyes on Jeffrey Epstein long before his death by apparent suicide in a New York City jail cell. The Bureau had plans to arrest Epstein while he was judging a beauty pageant in the US Virgin Islands in 2007, a year before his plea deal. The DoJ's Office of Professional Responsibility released a summary on Thursday of the handling of Epstein's first federal investigation between 2006 and 2008. The full 347-page report detailed law enforcement's plan to take Epstein into custody as early as May of 2007. Alex Acosta, the former Labor Secretary under the Trump administration, was at the time the Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. He agreed to a plea deal to grant immunity from all federal criminal charges to Epstein, along with four named co-conspirators. Epstein owned an island in the US Virgin Islands that he used as his primary residence. Now a tourist destination, it's referred to as 'Pedophile Island.'
