Avdiivka, a former coal hub in the eastern Donetsk region, has become a symbol of a grinding war in which neither Ukraine nor Russia has made a decisive breakthrough in more than a year. Around 1,350 people still live amongst its destroyed buildings and ruined apartment blocks, compared to 30,000 before the war -- the few still refusing to leave despite Russia's attacks.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accuses Russian President Vladimir Putin of trying to use the Israel-Hamas war in a bid to reduce Western support for Ukraine. "Putin is very much trying to take advantage of the Hamas attack on Israel in the hopes that it will distract us... and that it will result in the United States pulling back its resources" from Ukraine, Blinken tells a Senate hearing. Russian President Vladimir Putin will succeed in his bid to seize Ukrainian territory if the United States halts support for Kyiv, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says at a Senate hearing on supplemental funding for national security priorities including Ukraine, for which $44.4 billion has been requested. "I can guarantee you that without our support, Putin will be successful," Austin says. SOUNDBITE
