  • Changing of the Guard inside Buckingham Palace: King Charles III 'takes up his royal duties'

We take a look ahead as King Charles assumes the throne. FRANCE 24 is joined by Denis MacShane, former British Minister for European Affairs. France 24's Annette Young begins by reminding us how "the monarch plays a very important constitutional role," and Mr. MacShane explains that "King Charles is now the head of state, so he meets every week with the prime minister, he appoints a prime minister. The last thing the queen did was to do the kissing of the hand ceremony" as Liz Truss takes over at 10 Downing Street. He then added that "the queen said goodbye to Boris Johnson. And I just wondered as well, the very last thing she did if she wasn't glad to see probably the worst prime minister in my memory and her lifetime go away." As we look ahead, Mr. MacShane explains "King Charles now has to prepare for the farewell moments to the queen and the funeral ceremony." He notes that "the government has been up and down in recent years," and he shared an anecdote regarding Queen Elizabeth's feelings towards Brexit: "It is said that the queen wasn't very happy with Brexit when she had to read the queen's speech [...] She arrived at the Palace of Westminster with a large blue hat with tiny little yellow flowers. And everybody said, 'oh gosh, that's her sending a signal that she's pro-European.' "
