Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, spoke to FRANCE 24 a day after the visit of the French, German, Italian and Romanian leaders to Kyiv and Irpin. While welcoming this display of European unity with Ukraine, Podolyak called for more heavy weapons to be sent to his country. He said that such a move would change the situation on the ground in favour of the Ukrainian troops, faced with Russian advances in the eastern Donbas region.
It's not the sort of news that Ukrainian officials wanted to hear. The last bridge linking the eastern city of Severodonetsk with Ukrainian-controlled territory to the west has been destroyed. This comes as bloody street battles continue in the besieged city, with scores of civilians remaining stranded under unrelenting bombardment. This is all happening as French President Emmanuel Macron is visiting neighbouring Romania and then Moldova. We ask our panel what his trip means.
In his nightly address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says that the battle for Donbas "will surely go down in military history as one of the most brutal battles in Europe and for Europe". He adds that Ukraine has "no other choice but to move forward".

They say life imitates art. But in the case of Volodymyr Zelensky, art seemingly predicted life. He went from an acting role as Ukranian leader to a highly admired, real-life wartime president. How to explain such widespread appeal? What does he have that other leaders seem to lack? Régis Genté and Stéphane Siohan are the authors of one of the first French biographies of Volodymyr Zelensky.
