Lithuania says it will impose EU sanctions on the Russian Baltic Sea exclave of Kaliningrad, a move strongly criticised by the Kremlin.
The United States says it stands firmly behind Lithuania and NATO commitments to defend it after Russia warned the EU member country over restrictions on rail transit. "We stand by our NATO allies and we stand by Lithuania," State Department spokesman Ned Price tells reporters. SOUNDBITE
Lithuania on Monday defended its decision to bar rail transit from Russia to a Russian Baltic Sea exclave of goods hit by European Union sanctions, in a move that drew Moscow's strong anger amid high tensions in the region.
“This decision, indeed unprecedented, is a violation of everything and then some," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
The moment celebrated the country's newly-obtained EU candidate status.
