The quality built into the All-new Renault Austral, which was revealed this March, goes far beyond the choice of materials and the state-of-the-art on-board technology. Each detail was scrutinised to push the envelope further than ever. Olivier, an expert in perceived quality, explains the work he carried out on one of the emblematic interior design features in the first SUV of Renault’s Nouvelle Vague: its sliding hand rest – and what makes sliding it so exciting.
Artist, songwriter and author, electronica pioneer and technology aficionado, Jean-Michel Jarre is committed to working with Renault to develop the best possible in-car sound experience for the brand's new vehicles. One of his first projects was the development, along with Ircam and the group's sound design teams, of two types of sound for Renault's electric and hybrid models: the VSP (Vehicle Sound for Pedestrians), a low-speed exterior warning sound for pedestrians, and the Welcome sound sequence when entering the vehicle.The documentary "The story behind the sound design" goes behind the scenes of the work carried out and shows Jean-Michel Jarre's contribution as an artist as well as an engineer. It shines a spotlight on an amazing human adventure and explains the many issues involved in sound design, from the first thoughts to the reveal of these sounds on Scenic E-Tech electric at the 2023 IAA Munich Motor Show.
It takes a high-tech plant to build a high-tech vehicle. Investments at the plant in Palencia, Spain have enabled the facility to guarantee the best quality in terms of the manufacturing and operation of the All-new Renault Austral and its various features. The vehicle contains no less than 32 advanced driver‑assistance systems (ADAS), including the latest-generation head-up display, with settings that were adjusted particularly painstakingly. Indeed, two new ultra-modern calibration benches were built to do just that. Sergio, the lead on new projects at the plant’s assembly department, tells us that fine-tuning these two benches wasn’t easy due to a lighting issue. Here’s more about the problem, how they solved it and how the result is already benefitting the vehicles rolling out of this plant.
Experiencing the interior of the All-new Renault Austral is unique thanks to the carefully chosen textures and materials that have been tested at the Renault Technocentre secret laboratories in Guyancourt (greater Paris area). This is where Carla, trained chemist and head of the sensory panel at Renault, works with a team of testers to ensure that materials used on the car interiors are just as they should be. When it comes to covering everything a customer may want, be it a steering wheel and armrests that are pleasant to touch, comfortable seats, or a dashboard with just the right level of foaming, testers employ an unusual measuring device that is as original as it is reliable: humans.
