  • Yemenis collect firewood amid propane gas shortage

Sanaa, Aug 14 (EFE / EPA) .- Many Yemenis have no access to propane cooking gas due to an acute cooking gas shortage and its hikes, and have been forced to look for alternatives, including the use of firewood, as one of the consequences of the escalating conflict between the Houthis and the Saudi-backed government forces in Yemen since 2015. The domestic price of a propane gas cylinder, used mainly for cooking, increased from 1,500 Yemeni Rial (2.17 euro) in 2015 to 8,000 YR (11.59 euro) in 2021, forcing more people to cut and collect or purchase firewood for cooking instead of propane gas. The prolonged conflict has plunged the Arab country into the world's largest humanitarian crisis with an estimated 80 percent of its 29 million-population in need of daily humanitarian assistance.
