Coup in Burkina Faso: 'The military takeover is likely well welcomed'

Description

People in Burkina Faso awoke to a new military-led junta Tuesday, after mutinous soldiers ousted democratically elected President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré and seized control of the country. Days of gunfire and uncertainty in the capital, Ouagadougou, ended Monday evening when more than a dozen soldiers on state media declared that the country was now being run by their new organization, the Patriotic Movement for Safeguarding and Restoration. Anna Schmauder, Research Fellow at Clingendael’s Conflict Research Unit, joins France 24 to offer perspective on the military takeover. While "the situation has evolved very quickly" over the past few days, explains Ms. Schmauder, it is actually the reflection of "a broader development that has intensified over the past three months." The ousted president failed to combat the violent islamist insurgency and Ms. Schmauder points to widespread "frustration" among "the population and the military."
