A "massive" coral reef measuring approximately 1,600 feet has been discovered in Australia's Great Barrier Reef. According to CNN, the newly found reef system is taller than some of the world's highest skyscrapers. Scientists found the detached reef in waters off North Queensland while on an expedition. The reef system is the first to be discovered in more than 120 years. Robin Beaman, who led the expedition, said he was "surprised" by the discovery.

According to Allure, the chemicals can damage coral reefs when washed off skin and into the water. Nevertheless, there are still plenty of reef-safe sunscreens that offer the same UV protection--but with physical blockers like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. So if you want to soak up the sun in a tropical Hawaiian paradise, pack an SPF 30 (or higher) sunscreen labeled 'reef-safe' or 'marine-safe.' Aloha!
Tropical cyclone Yasa is barreling towards Fiji, bringing hurricane-force winds to the Pacific island nation. The powerful storm has rapidly strengthened over the past 24 hours from a Category 1 storm to a high-end Category 4. According to CNN, dangerous winds have increased from 80 miles per hour to 155 miles per hour. The storm has the potential to strengthen over the next 12 hours, before weakening slightly as it approaches Fiji. According to experts, a Category 4 storm can be expected to cause "catastrophic damage." The storm is expected to reach Fiji on Thursday night local time (Thursday morning ET).
In the last 30 years, Australia's Great Barrier Reef has lost 50% of its coral populations. According to CNN, experts say climate change is a key driver of the reef disturbance. Researchers assessed coral and their colony size on the Great Barrier Reef between 1995 and 2017. They found depletion of virtually all coral populations along the length of the reef. Coral reefs are some of the most vibrant marine ecosystems on the planet. A quarter to one-third of all marine species relies on them at some point in their life cycle.
