The EU is to better protect journalists from political interference under an unprecedented media freedom law adopted by the European Parliament. The legislation, backed in a vote by 464 EU lawmakers, with 92 against and 65 abstaining, also enshrines editorial independence and seeks to improve transparency on media ownership. IMAGES

The United States says that a Russian ban on US-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty shows Moscow's efforts to deny open information. "It is quite clear that they do not want their people to have information about what the Russian regime does abroad, what the Russian regime does to its own people," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller tells reporters. Wounded journalists are brought to the hospital after a blast in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif killed a security guard and wounded a group of journalists, as well as several children. Saturday's blast took place during an event honouring Afghanistan's media at a cultural centre in Mazar-i-Sharif. Police said a security guard was killed and that five journalists and three children were among the wounded. IMAGES
Jennifer Robinson, lawyer for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, calls the British government's approval of Assange's extradition to the United States "a grave threat to freedom of speech, not just for Julian but for every journalist and editor and media worker in this country."
