Several European nations started vaccinating children aged five to 11 against Covid-19 on Wednesday in an effort to contain a raging pandemic and keep schools open. In France, vaccination has only been approved for five to 11-year-olds at risk of developing serious illness, but the government has said it is considering extending it to all children on a voluntary basis.
French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation Tuesday amid a fresh rise in the rate of Covid-19 infections in France. He announced that, from December 15, booster shots will be mandatory for those over-65s to benefit from France's health pass, which provides access to restaurants, cultural events and intercity rail travel. He also announced a booster shot campaign would begin for 50 to 64-year-olds from early December. FRANCE 24's French Politics Editor Marc Perelman tells us more.
President Joe Biden hailed the move as a "turning point" in the fight against the pandemic.
A US advisory committee backed the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children ages five to 11, clearing the way for the vaccine to become available to millions of children.
The laboratory said it will be seeking FDA approval in the US to administer its vaccine to children under 12.
